In short
For a first trip to Canada, go between June and September. That is when all three of our itineraries run: Rockies lakes and roads, St. Lawrence whales and Bay of Fundy tides. Autumn colours, generally late September to mid-October, make a great second choice in the east; winter is a different kind of trip altogether.

When is the best time to visit Canada for a first trip?
Canada is vast, so you do not pick one season, you pick a region. In the Rockies, summer brings long days, thawed lakes and open roads such as the Icefields Parkway on our Banff to Jasper road trip. In the east, June to September suits both Quebec City's old town and the Maritime provinces, and it is generally the time to hope for whales in Charlevoix, as on our Quebec City and Charlevoix journey.
Here is our month-by-month reading for a touring holiday; it varies by region and from year to year. For the big picture, see our Canada page.

| Region | Best time | Main draw | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rockies (Banff, Jasper) | June to September | Glacial lakes, wildlife, Icefields Parkway | Changeable mountain weather |
| Quebec City and Charlevoix | June to September | Old town, St. Lawrence whales | Busy in high summer |
| Maritime provinces | June to September | Fundy tides, red cliffs of Prince Edward Island | Some seasonal activities |
Banff, Quebec or the Maritimes: which region should you choose?
If you dream of spectacular nature, the Banff to Jasper trip (7 nights) links Banff's turquoise lakes, the Columbia Icefield and Maligne Lake. If you prefer history and food in a French-speaking setting, the Quebec City and Charlevoix journey (6 nights) pairs North America's only walled city north of Mexico with the Charlevoix region. And Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island (7 nights) suits those after a quieter Canada of sea, tides and fishing villages.
Our experts' tip
Book early for July and August: Rockies accommodation is in very high demand then. June and September are often a good balance between crowds and weather.
What about autumn or winter in Canada?
Autumn charms with red and orange forests, generally from late September to mid-October in the east, but days get shorter and some seasonal tourist activities wind down. Winter is for snow lovers and those who enjoy deep cold: it is a trip to design differently, with other itineraries. Tell us what you are after and we will build the right season with you.
