In short
Sri Lanka has no single best season, but two monsoons to work around. For a classic route mixing the hill country, cultural sites and southern beaches, December to March is generally the best window; the east coast tends to shine from May to September.
- Best periodDecember to March (south, west, hills)
- East coastGenerally May to September
- AvoidOctober and November, rainy in-between months
- Suggested length5 to 6 nights per region
Why does Sri Lanka have two rainy seasons?
The island sits in the path of two monsoons. The south-west monsoon, known as yala, generally waters the west, the south and the hill country from May to September. The north-east monsoon, the maha, mostly hits the north and east from October to January. When it rains on one side, the sky is often clear on the other.
That is the key to choosing well. Rather than hunting for one perfect month for the whole island, start from what you want to see and think region by region. Between the monsoons, in April and in October–November, the weather is more changeable, with frequent stormy afternoon showers.
What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?
For a first trip crossing the island, January to March generally offers the best compromise: usable southern beaches, drier hills and accessible cultural sites. April remains pleasant before the rains return. Here is our month-by-month reading for an itinerary combining several regions.

Our experts' tip
If your dates are fixed in summer, don’t give up on Sri Lanka: simply point the itinerary towards the east coast and the centre rather than the south-west beaches.
Which region should you pick according to the season?
From December to March, the Kandy to Mirissa loop is a good choice: a train through the tea plantations to Ella, then southern beaches and a boat trip to watch blue whales. We see it as a six-night trip, ideal in winter.
From May to September, head east. Yala and Arugam Bay pairs a leopard safari with the east-coast surf village, when the sea there is generally more workable. For culture, the Cultural Triangle links Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and the Dambulla caves, with two favourable windows: January to March, then July to September.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month to go to Sri Lanka?
There is no single one: generally, December to March suits the south, west and hill country, and May to September the east coast. For a varied route, January to March is a good benchmark.
Can you visit Sri Lanka in summer?
Yes, as long as you adapt the itinerary. In summer the east coast and the centre are generally better than the south-west, where the yala monsoon brings rain.
When can you see whales in Mirissa?
Generally in winter, roughly November to April, when the sea is calmer on the south coast. Our Kandy to Mirissa trip is designed for that season, December to March.
