In short
The best time to visit Vietnam is generally February to April, when the north, centre and south are all reasonably dry at once. The rest of the year, the country's sharply contrasting climate means picking your region by month.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam stretches over 1,600 kilometres from north to south, which gives it three distinct climates at the same time. There is no single "best month" that works everywhere: the north can be cool and misty while the south is in full sun. The window that suits the most regions at once is generally February to April, once Hanoi's damp winter cold has faded, before central Vietnam hits its hottest stretch, and while the south is still in its dry season.

This calendar is an average: a route that favours the north and south while skipping central Vietnam can also work well in October or November. That is why we build every itinerary around each traveller's actual dates, rather than fitting them into a single "correct" month.
North, centre, south: a different climate in each region
In the north, around Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, winter (December to February) is cool and often overcast, with clear skies less common. Spring (March-April) and autumn (October-December) generally bring milder temperatures and better visibility for cruising among the bay's karst peaks. Summer, from May to August, is hot, very humid, and more prone to rain.
In central Vietnam, around Hoi An and Da Nang, the dry season generally runs from February to May, with pleasant, not scorching, temperatures. It is the most comfortable window to wander the Unesco-listed old town of Hoi An, before summer heat builds and rain and typhoons arrive later in the year.
In the south, around the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc, the dry season typically runs from December to April. The climate stays tropical year-round, with heavier rain from May to November, usually as late-afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain.
| Region | Best time | Season to watch |
|---|---|---|
| North (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay) | March-April and October-December | June to September: heat, humidity, possible typhoons over the bay |
| Centre (Hoi An, Da Nang) | February to May | September to December: typhoon season |
| South (Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) | December to April | July to September: more frequent rain, especially on Phu Quoc |
Should you worry about the monsoon or typhoons?
Typhoon season mainly affects central Vietnam, generally between August and November, peaking around September-October. It can occasionally disrupt travel around Hoi An or Da Nang. In the south, the monsoon is gentler: showers are frequent but usually brief, often followed by clear afternoons.
Our experts' tip
If your dates are fixed, we can flip the direction of the route: south to north in summer, north to south in winter, so you stay in the most comfortable region at each stage of the trip.
Good to know
Lunar New Year (Tet), falling in January or February depending on the year, is worth planning around: some businesses close and domestic transport gets very busy with Vietnamese families travelling home.
