When to Go to Colombia: Best Months by Region

In short

The best months to visit Colombia are generally December to March and July to August, the driest spells. The country can be visited all year round: it mostly depends on the region, since altitude shapes the climate more than the season does.

When is the best time to go to Colombia?

Colombia sits on the equator, so it has wetter and drier periods rather than four seasons. In the Andes, around Bogotá, Medellín and the coffee region, there are generally two favourable windows: December to March, and July to August. Sunny days are most likely then, which suits city visits, coffee farms and colonial villages.

The shoulder months (April-May, September) are still pleasant with a few showers, often in the afternoon. October and November are usually the wettest, especially on the Caribbean coast and in Medellín. You can still travel, but pack a rain jacket and keep your days flexible.

Which region suits which climate?

Climate here is read through altitude first. Bogotá, at roughly 2,600 metres, stays cool all year, so bring layers even in the dry season. Medellín, lower down, enjoys a mild, spring-like climate. The coffee region around Salento generally has two drier spells, December to February and July to August, ideal for the Cocora valley. Cartagena and the coast are hot and humid all year, with a drier period from December to April.

Our experts' tip

To combine the Andes and the Caribbean, aim for January to March: it is generally where the two overlap best. July-August suits cities and coffee well, but the coast can be more changeable.

When should you avoid Colombia, and what to do in the wet season?

There is no month you must rule out, but October and November call for flexibility. Rain, often concentrated late in the day, does not stop you from enjoying Bogotá, its museums and the Zipaquirá salt cathedral. Hikes and the coast, however, are nicer in the dry season.

One thing to plan for: Tayrona National Park closes temporarily at certain times of year, generally around February, June and late October, for ecological and spiritual reasons agreed with Indigenous communities. Dates change, so we check them before fixing your itinerary.

Good to know

Colombia is a country of microclimates: the same day can bring sun in Cartagena and mist in Bogotá. It is better to choose your route according to the season than the other way round.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Colombia?

There is no single ideal month, but January and February are generally well liked, with fairly dry conditions in both the Andes and the Caribbean coast.

Can you travel to Colombia in the rainy season?

Yes. Showers are often short and fall late in the day. Urban and cultural itineraries work well, but treks and the coast call for more flexibility.

How long should a first trip last?

Our trips generally run from 6 to 9 nights, with extensions possible in Cartagena or on a beach. Allow roughly 10 to 13 days to combine cities, coffee and the Caribbean.
