When to Go to Italy: A Month-by-Month Guide

In short

The best months to visit Italy are generally May, June and September. Temperatures are mild, days are long and crowds are easier to handle than in high summer; April and October are excellent alternatives.

What is the best month to visit Italy?

Italy stretches more than 1,000 kilometres from north to south, so the climate is never the same from one region to the next. Yet one rule holds almost everywhere: spring and early autumn offer the best balance of pleasant weather, beautiful light and manageable crowds. Here is our month-by-month reading, to adapt to your route.

In May and June, the Tuscan countryside is green, days are long and café terraces fill up. September extends the season, with a sea that is still warm in the south and the grape harvest in Tuscany. July and August are hot, often very hot in Rome, Florence or Sicily, and also when the most famous sites are busiest. These are general guidelines and vary from year to year.

Which season suits which region?

The right season depends mostly on what you want to see. For the art cities, favour spring and autumn, as in our Rome, Florence and Venice circuit. For the south and islands the season is longer: Sicily and Apulia are pleasant from April to October, with summer best kept for beach stays. In the north, the lakes are at their best from May to September, while the Dolomites are mainly a summer hiking and winter skiing destination.

Our experts' tip

If you are flexible, aim for the first half of June or mid-September: you get long days and a pleasant sea without the pressure of August, and good guided visits are easier to book.

When to avoid Italy, or visit it differently?

Winter should not be ruled out: from November to February museums are quieter, prices are often gentler and Rome or Venice take on a special atmosphere, even though days are short and rain is frequent in November. August is the trickiest month for big cities (heat, crowds), as many Italians take their own holidays around 15 August. It is, however, a good moment for the mountains. For a Venetian break, see our stay in Venice and the lagoon islands, or head to the lakes with our Milan and Italian lakes circuit.

Good to know

Public holidays and major events (Easter, Venice carnival, 15 August) change crowds and availability: book early if you travel on those dates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Italy?

May, June and September are generally the most balanced: mild weather, long days and lighter crowds than in August.

Can you visit Italy in winter?

Yes, for the art cities and Christmas markets, with quieter sites. Pack warm clothes and expect rain, especially in November; the mountains turn to skiing.

How many days should I plan for a first trip?

About a week is enough for one region or the Rome-Florence-Venice trio; allow 10 days or more to cross the country from north to south without rushing.
