When is the best time to go to Namibia?
Namibia is one of the driest countries in southern Africa, and its seasons are simple: a cool, dry southern winter and a hotter, wetter summer. Our Namibia trips are offered from May to October, because that is when roads, waterholes and temperatures work best together.
From May to October skies are generally clear, days are pleasant and nights can be cold, especially in the desert. From November to April it gets hotter and the rains arrive, usually peaking between January and March. The calendar below sums up how we read the country as a whole.

April and November are transition months: you may find greener scenery and fewer visitors, but also heat or less predictable tracks. Treat them as "possible" months, to be chosen knowingly.
When should you visit Etosha to see wildlife?
Etosha is the great draw of the dry season. Once the rains stop, vegetation thins out and animals gather around a handful of waterholes, so sightings of elephants, lions or black rhinos are unusually dense. That is exactly what our trip Namibia: Etosha, the Great Safari is built around, with a stay at Okaukuejo and its floodlit waterhole.
In the rainy season water is available everywhere, so animals spread out and sightings take more patience. In exchange, migratory birds are plentiful. Here is our region-by-region rule of thumb.
| Region | Suggested period | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Etosha | July to October | Wildlife concentrated around waterholes |
| Sossusvlei and the Namib | May to October | Mild days, cold nights, sunrise over the dunes |
| Swakopmund (coast) | All year | Coast often foggy and cool |
| Damaraland | May to October | Heat easier to bear in the dry season |
| Zambezi (Caprivi) | May to October | Boat trips on the Kwando, parks easiest in the dry season |
Our experts' tip
For a first safari in Namibia, aim for September or October: wildlife is very visible, but book early, as Etosha's camps are few.
Desert, coast or rivers: which Namibia should you choose?
Namibia is not a single landscape. The Namib Desert is very enjoyable in the southern winter, when days are mild; just pack warm layers for the pre-dawn climb of Dune 45. On the coast around Swakopmund, Atlantic fog is common and temperatures are cooler than inland.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Zambezi Region, the former Caprivi Strip, is a green, watery Namibia. Our trip the Caprivi Strip, the Land of Water combines Kwando river cruises with safaris in the Mudumu elephant corridor. For dunes, Sossusvlei to Damaraland links Sesriem, Swakopmund and the desert-adapted elephants.

Are there months to avoid in Namibia?
No month is off limits, but January to March ask for some tolerance: marked heat, showers and sometimes difficult tracks. If you travel then, talk to our team so we can adapt the programme. You can also compare with our guide to when to go to Tanzania if you are torn between two safari countries.
