What is the best season to visit French Polynesia?
The islands have two main seasons. The dry season, roughly May to October, brings milder temperatures, less rain and usually very clear water. The wet season, from November to April, is hotter and more humid: showers are more frequent, yet they are often followed by sunshine, and prices can be gentler.
Within the dry season, July to September is generally described as the most settled period, and also the busiest. May, June and October are excellent compromises, with fewer crowds and still favourable weather. Here is our month-by-month view.

Our experts' tip
If your dates are flexible, aim for May–June or October: the weather is generally lovely and the islands are calmer than in high summer. Book flights and overwater bungalows early for July and August.
When can you see whales in French Polynesia?
Humpback whales generally visit Polynesian waters from June to October to breed, notably around Moorea and Rurutu. If whale watching is on your wish list, the dry season is therefore also the right window. Outings run with local operators who follow strict rules, and we can build them into your itinerary.
Which island or archipelago should you choose by season?
The climate differs from one archipelago to another. The Society Islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora) follow the classic May–October pattern. The Marquesas, over fifteen hundred kilometres from Tahiti, run on a shifted calendar: their drier season is rather July to December, depending on the source. The Tuamotu atolls, such as Rangiroa, are known for diving, especially in calm seas.
| Archipelago | Generally recommended period | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| Society (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora) | May to October | Lagoons, overwater bungalows, hikes |
| Tuamotu (Rangiroa) | May to October | Diving, Tiputa Pass, grey reef sharks |
| Marquesas | Rather July to December | Cliffs, valleys, archaeological sites |
