A stretch of the legendary Route 66 and its vintage gas stations at Seligman, then the Grand Canyon: from the South Rim, the Colorado River flows 1,500 metres below.

Monument Valley – Page
Monument Valley, on Navajo land, and its red sandstone buttes made famous by westerns (optional 4x4 tour with the Navajo), then Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon dam at Page.

Bryce Canyon – Las Vegas
Bryce Canyon and its amphitheatre of orange hoodoos, then the drive to Las Vegas and its glittering casinos.

Death Valley – Bakersfield
Death Valley, the lowest point in North America: Zabriskie Point, Badwater and its salt flats, then the drive into California.

Giant sequoias – Modesto
Sequoia or Kings Canyon park and its giant sequoias, including the General Sherman, the largest tree in the world by volume.

Modesto – San Francisco
San Francisco: the Golden Gate, Fisherman's Wharf and its sea lions, the cable cars, Chinatown and the Victorian houses of Alamo Square.

Monterey, Carmel and Santa Barbara.

The Pacific coast road: Monterey and its bay, the artists' village of Carmel, the 17-Mile Drive and the cliffs of Big Sur.

Santa Barbara – Los Angeles
Santa Barbara, its Spanish mission and its white houses with tiled roofs, and the Danish village of Solvang.
Day 11
Los Angeles
A tour of Los Angeles: Hollywood and its Walk of Fame, the villas of Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, then the beach and pier at Santa Monica.

The lagoons of Polynesia.
