The Placencia Peninsula, in southern Belize, remains off the tourist circuits concentrated around Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, offering twenty-four kilometres of white-sand beach lined with coconut palms and a pace of life still largely dictated by small-scale fishing. Offshore, the Gladden Spit channel attracts whale sharks every spring, drawn to feed on grouper eggs during spawning, one of the few places in the world where this encounter remains predictable.
The village of Placencia, built along a pedestrian lane recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest main street in the world, retains a laid-back atmosphere typical of the English-speaking Caribbean. The beach, running the full length of the peninsula, remains vast enough to offer deserted stretches even in high season.
Each year, between March and June, around the full moons, groupers gather by the thousands to spawn at the Gladden Spit channel, drawing whale sharks that come to feed on the eggs released into the water. The phenomenon, one of the most predictable in the world for this otherwise hard-to-locate species, allows a snorkelling encounter governed by the marine reserve's strict rules.
