The Cuyabeno Wildlife Production Reserve, in the Ecuadorian Amazon, offers one of the fastest accesses to Amazon rainforest on the continent, with no need for an additional domestic flight. Its blackwater lagoons, flooded forests, and density of caimans, monkeys, and freshwater pink dolphins concentrate Amazonian biodiversity into a compact area.
A trip by silent-motor canoe on Laguna Grande, the heart of the reserve, allows sightings of freshwater pink dolphins, a rare species that survives only in certain Amazonian waterways. A sunset swim, surrounded by howler monkeys announcing nightfall, remains one of the trip's highlights.
A visit to a Siona indigenous community, one of the region's oldest native peoples, offers insight into the traditional use of the forest's medicinal plants and the making of chicha, a fermented manioc drink prepared using a method passed down through generations.
