Ideal length
A journey between Georgetown, a capital of wooden colonial architecture, and Kaieteur Falls, one of the world's tallest single-drop waterfalls, hidden deep in the Iwokrama rainforest.
With a single drop of two hundred and twenty-six metres, Kaieteur is nearly five times higher than Niagara Falls, yet remains accessible only by light aircraft across a roadless rainforest. This isolation, which has long kept mass tourism at bay, now guarantees an almost private experience in front of one of the most powerful and least-visited waterfalls on Earth.
Created in 1996 to demonstrate that a rainforest can be both sustainably managed and preserved, the Iwokrama reserve protects a million hectares of primary canopy home to jaguars, tapirs, harpy eagles and one of the Amazon basin's densest populations of giant otters, observable on river safaris along the Essequibo.
