Montevideo, the southernmost capital on the continent after Buenos Aires, shares with Argentina the claim to have invented tango, born in its working-class neighbourhoods in the late 19th century. The city is explored along the Rambla, a continuous promenade of over twenty kilometres along the Río de la Plata, and the Mercado del Puerto, a former covered market turned into a row of parrillas grilling meat for over a century.
The Ciudad Vieja, a historic quarter built on the old fortified peninsula, blends Art Deco facades and colonial buildings around Independence Square. The Mercado del Puerto, a former 19th-century iron market hall, comes alive every midday with the smoke of parrillas grilling asado and chorizo, a Sunday institution for the city's residents.
The Rambla, one of the longest continuous waterfront promenades in the world, is explored by bike or on foot, among early-morning joggers and fishermen settled on the seawall. In the evening, the milongas of the Barrio Sur district, the birthplace of Montevidean tango alongside candombe, an Afro-Uruguayan rhythm played on drums, offer a dance introduction in an atmosphere far less touristy than Buenos Aires.
