A journey through one of the world's oldest rainforests, between an orangutan rehabilitation centre and night cruises on the Kinabatangan River, a refuge for pygmy elephants and proboscis monkeys.
Founded in 1964, the Sepilok centre takes in orphaned or injured orangutans, often victims of deforestation linked to palm oil plantations, and gradually reintroduces them into the surrounding forest. The feeding platform, visible from a respectful distance at the observation deck, lets visitors watch these great apes in semi-freedom without ever approaching them directly — a rehabilitation process that often takes several years per individual.
Roughly 130 million years old, Borneo's rainforest is thought to have survived uninterrupted through the ice ages that ravaged other jungles elsewhere in the world — which explains the exceptional biodiversity concentrated along the Kinabatangan River. On a single river cruise, it's not unusual to spot proboscis monkeys with their prominent noses, Bornean pygmy elephants, a subspecies unique to the island, and giant monitor lizards basking on the banks.
