Cambodia: The Cardamom Mountains and Koh Rong

A journey between two wild sides of Cambodia, far from Angkor: the Cardamom Mountains, one of the last intact great primary forests of South-East Asia where elephants and Indochinese leopards still survive, then Koh Rong, an island in the Gulf of Thailand whose waters light up certain nights with bioluminescent plankton, a rare natural phenomenon that draws travellers to sleep on its deserted beaches.

The Cardamom Mountains

Days 1-2

The first chapter unfolds in the Cardamoms, a mountain range in south-western Cambodia home to one of the last intact great primary forests of South-East Asia, spared deforestation thanks to its isolation during the decades of conflict that affected the country. Conservation programmes, led by local rangers trained to fight poaching, allow Asian elephants, Indochinese leopards, and an exceptional variety of birdlife to survive.

Day 1

A hike through the primary forest

A hike guided by a local ranger through the Cardamoms' primary forest, in search of wild elephant tracks and exceptional birdlife, to a canopy observation post.

Day 2

Kayaking the river to a hidden waterfall

A kayak descent of a Cardamom river to an isolated waterfall, a swim in a natural pool surrounded by dense jungle, far from any other presence.

Koh Rong and the Bioluminescent Plankton

Days 1-2

A drive to the coast then a boat to Koh Rong, Cambodia's second-largest island, whose interior remains covered in jungle and whose beaches, some without electricity or roads, have kept an authentic atmosphere far from resort complexes. On certain moonless nights, the bioluminescent plankton thriving in its shallow waters lights up at the slightest movement, turning every step in the water into a trail of blue light.

Day 1

The wild beaches of the east coast

A longtail boat crossing to the wild beaches of Koh Rong's east coast, with no electricity or roads, a day of relaxation far from any other presence.

Day 2

A night swim in the bioluminescent plankton

A boat trip at dusk to observe the bioluminescent plankton lighting up the island's shallow waters, a night swim on moonless nights for the best experience.
