A journey between the plain of Bagan, bristling with over two thousand ancient temples, and Inle Lake, where villages and floating gardens drift with the water, propelled by fishermen who row with their legs.
Between the 9th and 13th centuries, the rulers of the Bagan kingdom built over ten thousand temples, stupas and monasteries across this plain bordering the Irrawaddy — more than two thousand still stand today. Unlike Angkor, none were left to the jungle: the plain remains open, offering a unique panorama where red-brick and gilded sanctuaries stretch to the horizon, particularly striking at sunrise and sunset.
On this highland lake, almost everything floats or stands on stilts — the houses, the monasteries, the markets and even the tomato gardens, grown on rafts of water hyacinth anchored to the lakebed. The Intha fishermen have developed a leg-rowing technique unique in the world, freeing their hands to work the net — a gesture that, over generations, has become as much about identity as function.
