At Gardens by the Bay, the Supertrees, vertical structures over forty metres tall covered in climbing plants, embody Singapore's vision of a 'city in a garden' rather than a mere 'garden in a city'. Every evening, a sound-and-light show animates these artificial trees, while the neighbouring domes, the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest, recreate Mediterranean and tropical mountain climates under pillar-free glass structures.
Founded as a British trading post in 1819, Singapore early on attracted Chinese, Malay and Indian communities that shaped entire districts which have remained remarkably intact despite the city's dazzling modernisation. Chinatown and Little India, with their colourful facades and temples open to all, offer a striking contrast with the glass skyscrapers just a few streets away — two faces of the same city that has never disowned its multicultural past.
