The first chapter unfolds on Andros, the Bahamas' largest yet paradoxically least-visited island, whose limestone bedrock is riddled with over one hundred and seventy blue holes, vertical sinkholes formed during ice ages when sea level was much lower. Some of these inland blue holes plunge over two hundred metres deep and remain connected by a vast, still partly unexplored network of drowned caves, making Andros a world-reference site for cave diving.
Day 1
Diving an inland blue hole
A guided dive in one of Andros's inland blue holes, where a layer of fresh water floats above denser salt water, creating an optical mirage effect divers call a "halocline."
Day 2
The reef of the world's third-largest barrier
A boat trip to the world's third-largest barrier reef, which runs along Andros's east coast for over one hundred and eighty kilometres, snorkelling among preserved marine life.
Days 1-2
A flight to Bimini, the islet closest to Florida that Ernest Hemingway frequented in the 1930s, writing part of his novel "To Have and Have Not" there and helping popularise big-game sport fishing in waters renowned for marlin and tuna. The island remains today one of the rare places in the world where wild spotted dolphins naturally, with no training, come to meet swimmers over shallow sandbanks.
