Mount Gay distillery's records date back to 1703, making it the oldest rum brand still in continuous production in the world. Barbados, where sugar cane was introduced as early as the 17th century by British colonists, in fact claims the title of rum's birthplace itself — a craft passed down on the island for over three centuries, from distillation to ageing in American oak barrels.
While the west coast cultivates calm lagoons ideal for swimming, Barbados's Atlantic east coast remains largely wild, pounded by waves that make it a recognised surf spot but unsuitable for swimming. Bathsheba Beach, with its giant coral boulders sculpted by millennia of marine erosion, offers the most striking image of this — a landscape that contrasts radically with the usual postcard image of the Caribbean.
