Founded in 1498, Santo Domingo is the oldest continuously inhabited city established by Europeans in the Americas, and its Zona Colonial holds a string of 'firsts' — the first cathedral, the first paved street, the first hospital, the first university. UNESCO-listed, it's best explored along shaded lanes lined with colonial facades, at a deliberately slower pace than the beach resorts of the east coast.
Each year, between January and March, several thousand humpback whales leave the North Atlantic to breed in the warm, shallow waters of Samaná Bay — one of the largest gatherings of the species anywhere in the world. Boat trips, governed by strict distance rules, allow visitors to watch the males' spectacular breaches and the interactions between mothers and calves from just tens of metres away.
