Trinidad's national bird, the scarlet ibis gathers by the hundreds each evening in the mangroves of the Caroni Sanctuary, just south of Port of Spain, to roost safely away from predators. The sight of these scarlet clouds crossing the sky at sunset, before settling on the mangroves like ripe fruit, remains one of the Caribbean's most spectacular birdwatching experiences.
Far quieter than Trinidad, Tobago has made preserving its nature a priority since the 18th century, when the British crown designated Main Ridge as the Western Hemisphere's first protected forest reserve. Its deserted beaches and still-untouched coral reefs, spared from mass tourism, make it a prime destination for diving and relaxing far from the crowds.
