The trip begins with an evening at the State Opera, where some of history's greatest composers once performed. Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs' summer residence, and the Belvedere, home to Klimt's 'The Kiss', round out the portrait of a city that has made imperial grandeur and classical music its identity, never falling into mere tourist folklore.
The change of pace is total on arrival in Hallstatt, a village on the shore of an almost perfectly clear lake, ringed by peaks that seem to plunge straight into the water. The oldest still-operating salt mine in the world and an excursion to Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace, round out this second chapter — less imperial, more intimate, at the scale of a mountain village.
