Rebuilt in four years after the 1695 French bombardment, Brussels' Grand-Place brings together guild houses with richly gilded baroque façades, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Victor Hugo called it the most beautiful square in the world — a judgement few visitors dispute, especially at nightfall, when the lighting reveals every carved detail.
Frozen in its medieval urban layout since its harbour silted up in the 15th century, Bruges has kept a near-intact historic centre, entirely UNESCO-listed. Its canals, stone bridges and eighty-three-metre belfry make it one of Northern Europe's best-preserved cities, best explored early in the morning before the tour buses arrive.
