Dug in the 17th century to organise the city's expansion during its commercial golden age, Amsterdam's three concentric canals — Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht — form a unique urban ensemble, UNESCO-listed. Their narrow gabled houses, once taxed by the width of their façade, still tell the story of a city built on maritime trade.
Reconstructed from authentic mills and houses gathered from across the region, the village of Zaanse Schans lets visitors see windmills still at work, once used to grind spices, oil and timber, from an era when the Zaan region counted more than a thousand industrial mills, the highest concentration on Earth.
