Ideal length
London for its energy and free museums, the Cotswolds for a taste of the English countryside, then Scotland for its castles and lochs. A clean contrast between capital and open air, just a few train hours apart.
The trip opens with two days in London: an evening along the Thames to a lit-up Tower Bridge, then Westminster and Big Ben in the morning, Notting Hill's pastel houses and Portobello Market in the afternoon. The road then runs into the Cotswolds, where the golden-stone villages of Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water offer an immediate contrast to the capital's energy — a night at a country inn to stretch out the slower pace.
A train ride leads to Edinburgh, where the floodlit castle dominates the old town from the first evening. After a visit to the castle at opening time and a walk down the Royal Mile to Holyroodhouse, the trip pushes into the Highlands: Glencoe valley, the shores of Loch Ness, and one last whisky at a village pub before heading back to Edinburgh for the return flight.
