Starting in 2007, Ljubljana began progressively closing its city centre to car traffic, a rare choice that turned the Slovenian capital into one of the most pleasant cities in Europe to explore on foot. The Ljubljanica River, lined with café terraces and crossed by bridges adorned with dragons — the city's legendary symbol — runs through a human-scale historic centre, overlooked by a medieval castle reachable by funicular.
Lake Bled owes its fame to a rare combination: a small island crowned by a baroque church at its exact centre, a medieval castle perched on a steep overhanging cliff, and a chain of alpine peaks as a backdrop. The crossing to the island is made exclusively by pletna, a flat-bottomed boat rowed by boatmen whose trade has been passed down through generations for centuries.
