Qal'at al-Bahrain rests on an artificial mound formed by the layering of several successive cities since the Bronze Age, capital of the ancient Dilmun civilisation mentioned in Sumerian texts. UNESCO-listed since 2005, the site continues to yield archaeological discoveries that make Bahrain one of the oldest cradles of Gulf maritime trade.
Before the discovery of Japanese cultured pearls in the 1930s, Bahrain was the world centre of the natural pearl trade. The UNESCO-listed Muharraq Trail links seventeen historic buildings, from merchant houses to divers' workshops, telling the story of an entire economy built on deep free-diving, practised with no equipment at all.
