A journey between Beirut, a city forever rebuilding itself between the Mediterranean and the mountains, Byblos, a Phoenician city continuously inhabited for seven thousand years, and Baalbek, its Roman columns among the tallest ever raised.
Built over more than two centuries starting in the 1st century BCE, the Baalbek temple complex testifies to the Roman Empire's outsized ambition in this remote province. The Temple of Jupiter, of which only six of the original fifty-four columns survive, rises over twenty metres — the tallest Roman columns ever built, carved from stone blocks among the heaviest ever moved by human hands in antiquity.
Byblos claims the title of the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, with traces of occupation dating back over seven thousand years. The ancient harbour, dominated by a 12th-century Crusader castle built on Roman foundations that themselves rest on Phoenician remains, sums up on its own the layers of history stacked on this tiny site — a place said to have even given its name to the word 'Bible', via the Greek byblos denoting the papyrus exported from there.
