Salalah, capital of Oman's southern Dhofar province, benefits every year between June and September from the khareef, a monsoon arriving from the Indian Ocean that wraps the surrounding hills in cool mist and turns the desert landscape into green grassland dotted with waterfalls, a phenomenon unique across the entire Arabian Peninsula that draws visitors from the whole Gulf every summer.
The khareef, a summer monsoon affecting the Dhofar mountains between June and September, wraps the region in cool fog and fine rain that transform arid hills into brilliant green grassland within weeks, a striking contrast with the rest of the Arabian Peninsula at the height of summer. This unique climatic phenomenon, caused by Indian Ocean currents meeting the coastal terrain, draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from the Gulf each year seeking to escape the heat.
Wadi Darbat, a green valley about twenty kilometres from Salalah, is covered during the monsoon in temporary waterfalls and a lake that exists only in this season, surrounded by spectacular limestone cliffs. The region also remains the historic cradle of frankincense, a resin extracted from trees that grow wild on the surrounding hills and that made Dhofar's commercial fortune since antiquity, shipped as far as Egypt and Rome.
