Chefchaouen, the Blue City: What to See and How Long

In short

Plan one or two nights in Chefchaouen: enough time to wander the blue medina, climb up to the kasbah and enjoy the soft morning light. Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant seasons.

  • Don't missMedina, Outa el-Hammam square, kasbah, Ras El Maa
  • From FezAbout 200 km by road

What should you see in Chefchaouen?

Chefchaouen is best explored on foot, without a tight schedule. The medina, with its walls painted in many shades of blue, unfolds through flowered stairways, small squares and patios. Each lane has its own character, and getting a little lost is how you find the prettiest corners.

The heart of town is Outa el-Hammam square, lined with cafés and restaurants and perfect for a break in the shade. Next to it, the kasbah offers views over the medina and the Rif mountains; entry is generally paid, at a modest fee. Just outside the medina, the Ras El Maa spring, where locals still wash their laundry, makes a simple and authentic stroll.

With a little more time, the Akchour waterfalls are the region's most popular nature outing. They lie roughly an hour away by road and deserve a proper half day.

Our experts' tip

Get up early: at dawn the lanes are quiet, the light is soft and the shops are only just opening. It is the best time to take photos and walk in peace.

How long should you stay in Chefchaouen?

It depends on your pace. One day is enough for a first taste, but it leaves little room for wandering. One night lets you see the town at sunset and again, calm, the next morning. With two nights you can add a hike or a trip to the waterfalls.

When is the best time to visit Chefchaouen?

March to May and September to November are generally the most comfortable months for walking the lanes and sitting on terraces. Summer can be hot, and winter is cooler and damper in the Rif, so pack a jacket. To compare seasons across the country, read our guide on when to go to Morocco.

How do you combine Chefchaouen with Fez?

Chefchaouen pairs beautifully with Fez, the oldest of the imperial cities, whose medina is UNESCO-listed. The contrast is striking: on one side a maze of souks, madrasas and craftsmen; on the other a quiet, colourful mountain town.

That is exactly the spirit of our Morocco: Fez and Chefchaouen, the Medina and the Blue City trip. Over five days, in a private vehicle with a driver, you spend a guided day in the Fez medina, travel to Chefchaouen by road (about 200 km), then have a free morning in the souks before heading back. Departures are guaranteed, limited to five participants, on half board with local guides.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Chefchaouen blue?

Explanations vary by source and none is universally accepted. What is certain is that the blue walls now define the town and attract travellers from around the world.

Can you visit Chefchaouen in a day from Fez?

It is possible but rushed, since the road is about 200 km each way. We recommend sleeping in town so you can enjoy it in peace.

Do you need a guide for the medina?

The medina is fairly small and easy to walk. A local guide is still useful to understand the town's history and find quieter spots, especially in Fez.
