When to go to Morocco: the month-by-month guide

In short: March–May and September–November are the two most comfortable windows for most of Morocco, with mild temperatures in Marrakech and the High Atlas, a Sahara that's still liveable by day, and particularly photogenic light. Summer (June–August) remains a good option for the Atlantic coast — Essaouira, Agadir — but gets tough in the desert and in Marrakech, where the mercury regularly tops 40°C.

Morocco's climate at a glance

Morocco doesn't have one climate — it has several. The same July can mean 25°C and a cool breeze in Essaouira, and 45°C in the shade in Zagora, at the gateway to the Sahara. Three zones worth knowing before picking a date:

• The imperial cities and the High Atlas (Marrakech, Fez, Chefchaouen): continental climate, cool winters (5-15°C at night) and very hot summers (35-40°C).
• The Sahara and the south (Merzouga, the Dadès valley): cool nights year-round, scorching days from June to August.
• The Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir): tempered by the trade winds, pleasant nearly all year, rarely above 28°C.

Month by month

March to May — the best window to combine everything

Almond trees bloom across the High Atlas, days hover between 20 and 27°C in Marrakech, and the Sahara is still walkable by day. This is the most requested period for a trip that blends imperial cities, mountains and desert — like our grand tour of the imperial cities, the Sahara and the valley of roses.

June to August — for the coast, not the desert

Heat becomes intense inland. This is, however, the best season for the Atlantic coast, where the wind keeps things liveable and Essaouira's surf season is in full swing.

September to November — the second ideal window

Summer heat fades, desert nights stay mild without turning cold, and the autumn light is especially flattering on the High Atlas's rammed-earth kasbahs.

December to February — Morocco's mountain side

Marrakech stays pleasant by day (18-20°C) but desert nights can drop below 5°C — pack warm layers for a night under a Berber tent. It's also the season the High Atlas gets snow, visible from Marrakech's rooftops on a clear day.

Our recommendation

For a first trip that wants to see it all — medinas, mountains and dunes — April or October remain the safest months. For a relaxation- and ocean-focused trip, July or August work very well on the coast.
