In short
The best time to visit Mauritius is generally May to November, during the drier, cooler southern winter. September to November often strike the best balance of warm sea, little rain and moderate wind; from January to March, heat and storms come with a cyclone risk.

What is the best month to visit Mauritius?
Mauritius lies in the southern hemisphere: the austral summer, from November to April, is hot and humid, while winter, from May to October, is drier and cooler. On the coast, temperatures generally stay mild all year, around 18 to 24 °C in winter and up to 30 °C or more in summer. The Mauritian tourism board also places the high season between May and December.
Here is our month-by-month reading, to adjust to the coast you choose: the north and west are often more sheltered, while the east and south catch more of the trade winds. For the bigger picture, see our Mauritius destination page.

Our experts' tip
If your dates are fixed, tell us: we adapt the coast and the hotel to the season, for example favouring the north or west, which are more sheltered from the winter wind.
Should you worry about cyclone season?
Sources differ on exact dates: it is usually given as January to March, sometimes November to April. Direct hits remain rare, but the period is less predictable and rain is more frequent. If you travel in the austral summer, keep some flexibility and take suitable travel insurance.
By contrast, May to October is the most comfortable time to combine beach and discovery, which our trips reflect: Port Louis to Le Morne Brabant (May to December), Grand Bassin and Île aux Cerfs (May to November) or Rodrigues, the Other Island (May to October).
Where to go: beach, nature or culture?
Mauritius is more than beaches. Around Chamarel, the seven-coloured earths and the Black River Gorges are best explored in dry weather. Near Le Morne Brabant, the lagoon is known for kitesurfing, often better when the winds are settled. For a pure relaxation stay, our beach holidays offer plenty of ideas.
Rodrigues, about 500 km offshore, has a rural Creole feel and a vast lagoon: a good complement to the main island if you have a few extra days.
