Rodrigues, an autonomous dependency of Mauritius located five hundred kilometres offshore, cultivates a distinct cultural identity, closer to rural Creole traditions than the main island's tourist pace. The lagoon, one of the largest in the Indian Ocean, is explored by octopus fishing alongside Rodriguan women who keep alive this ancestral practice at low tide.
Rodrigues's lagoon, one of the largest in the Indian Ocean at over two hundred square kilometres, partly dries out at low tide, revealing expanses where the island's women fish for octopus using a simple metal rod, following a method passed down through generations. An accompanied outing offers an introduction to this traditional fishing practice, as much technical as it is social.
The François Leguat Giant Tortoise Reserve, set up in a former plantation converted into a sanctuary, reintroduces Aldabra giant tortoises into an ecosystem that lost its endemic species after colonisation. The nearby limestone caves, carved out by underground water, are visited on a guided hike through galleries still largely unexplored.
