In short
The best time to visit Costa Rica is generally the dry season, from December to April. The green season (May to November) brings lush scenery and fewer crowds, and the Caribbean coast follows its own rhythm, so it depends on what you want from the trip.

What is the best season to visit Costa Rica?
The country follows two seasons. From December to April, the dry season brings bright mornings and easy roads, which is why it is the most popular time for Pacific beaches, volcanoes and forest hikes. Prices and visitor numbers are generally higher, so it pays to book early.
From May to November, the green season does not mean days of non-stop rain. More often the sun shines in the morning and showers arrive late in the day. The vegetation is at its best and lodges are quieter. September and October are generally the wettest months on the Pacific side.
Which months should you choose?
Here is our general reading of the country, focused on the Pacific and the highlands. It is only indicative, as the climate varies a lot from one region to another.

Note that the Caribbean coast does not follow this calendar. Around Tortuguero, the driest periods are generally February to March and late summer through October, precisely when the Pacific side is at its wettest.
Our experts' tip
If you travel in September or October, combine both slopes: a stay in Tortuguero often offers gentler conditions before you head on to the dry beaches of Guanacaste.
Which region should you pick for your dates?
| Region | Generally ideal period | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Arenal and Monteverde | December to April | Volcano, hot springs, cloud forest |
| Manuel Antonio (Pacific) | December to April | Beaches, sloths, capuchin monkeys |
| Tortuguero (Caribbean) | February-March, July to October | Canals, green turtle nesting |
| Guanacaste | December to April | Dry forest, Pacific beaches |
| Osa Peninsula | December to April | Corcovado, wildlife, remote access |
For beaches and volcanoes, the dry season remains the most comfortable. To see green turtles nesting at Tortuguero, the trip we offer runs from July to October. As for Osa, the further you go from the classic routes, the more the dry season helps with getting around.
