When is the best time to visit Portugal?
Portugal stretches roughly 560 km from north to south and faces the Atlantic, so the climate differs noticeably between Porto, Lisbon and the Algarve. Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September-October) generally offer the best balance: mild to warm days, beautiful light and cities that are pleasant to explore on foot.
Winter is wetter, especially in the north, and a rainy day can spoil a day of sightseeing. It is also the season of the big waves at Nazaré, which you can see on our Magic of Portugal tour. Our mainland European tours are offered from April to October.

Our experts' tip
See Lisbon and Porto in spring or September, when the steep streets are easy to walk without summer heat, and keep July and August for the Algarve and its beaches.
When should you go: Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve or the Azores?
Lisbon and the centre: April to June and September-October are the most comfortable months for Sintra, Óbidos, Coimbra or Batalha. Porto and the Douro: the north is wetter, but the valley is lovely from May to October; late summer and early autumn generally coincide with the grape harvest, when the terraced vineyards change colour.
The Algarve: the golden cliffs, Lagos and the Ria Formosa can be visited from April to October, and swimming is generally best from June to September, as the Atlantic stays cool. The Azores: in the middle of the Atlantic, the archipelago has a mild oceanic climate with frequent rain; May to September is generally the most favourable period for walking around Sete Cidades.
