When to Go to Croatia: Best Months by Region

In short

The best time to visit Croatia is generally late May to June, then September. The sea is pleasant, the days are long and the coast is less crowded than in midsummer; July and August work too, but they are hotter and busier.

What is the best month to visit Croatia?

Croatia has a long, island-studded coastline, yet the seasons follow a simple pattern: a Mediterranean climate on the coast, with hot, dry summers and milder, wetter winters, and a cooler interior. Our three Croatian itineraries all point to the same ideal window, from May to September.

Within that window, we mostly recommend June and September. In June the days are very long and the sea is generally pleasant for swimming; in September the water still holds the summer’s warmth while visitor numbers drop noticeably. May suits sightseeing and walking, with a sea that is still a little cool.

July and August are the months for swimming and lively village festivals, but also for heat and crowds, particularly in Dubrovnik and Split. If you travel as a family during school holidays, book early and plan quieter days on the islands.

When to go: Dalmatia, the islands or Istria?

The right month also depends on what you are after. Dalmatia and its islands are all about the sea and sailing, while Istria, further north, mixes beaches, hills and food. If you are still weighing up several Mediterranean options, our guide to choosing a Greek island offers a useful comparison.

RegionSuggested periodWhat you come for
Southern Dalmatia (Split, Hvar, Korčula, Dubrovnik)June and SeptemberIslands, city walls, coves; Hvar’s lavender generally in early summer
Northern Dalmatia (Zadar, Kornati)Late May to SeptemberSailing among uninhabited islands, snorkelling, sunsets
Istria (Rovinj, Motovun)May to June, September to OctoberVenetian town, vineyards, white truffles generally in autumn

Our experts’ tip

For an island-to-island boat itinerary, aim for June or September: services are generally fuller than in spring, and you avoid the midsummer peak. Wind can pick up on the Adriatic, so keep some flexibility in the plan.

Can you visit Croatia in the off-season?

Yes, as long as you change your goal. From October to April the coast is generally quieter: you visit towns, walk and enjoy local food, but swimming is off the menu. Istria is a good autumn choice for its cuisine and truffle season.

On the islands, some hotels and restaurants close in winter and crossings are generally less frequent. We therefore prefer to keep the boat itinerary for May to September, as our trip pages indicate.
