Rovinj, a former Venetian town built on a peninsula on the Istrian coast, retains a historic centre of cobbled lanes and colourful facades inherited from several centuries of rule by the Republic of Venice, dominated by the bell tower of St Euphemia's Church visible from across the bay. The Istrian hinterland, nicknamed the "new Tuscany" for its hills covered in vineyards and olive groves, is home to one of Europe's main white truffle-producing regions, harvested in forests using dogs trained according to a tradition passed down through generations.

Rovinj, the Venice of Istria

Rovinj, under Venetian rule from 1283 to 1797, retains a historic centre built on a former island connected to the mainland in the 18th century by filling in the strait that separated it, a dense urban layout of narrow, cobbled lanes directly inherited from Venetian architecture. The bell tower of St Euphemia's Church, built in the 18th century modelled on St Mark's Campanile in Venice, rises over sixty metres and remains visible from across the bay, historically serving as a landmark for local sailors.

Istria, the New Tuscany and its Truffles

The Istrian hinterland, nicknamed the "new Tuscany" for its hills covered in vineyards, olive groves, and perched medieval villages, holds in the Motovun forest one of Europe's main white truffle-producing regions, traditionally harvested at dawn using trained dogs capable of detecting the precious underground fungus. This truffle-hunting tradition, passed down through generations within local families, has helped make Istrian cuisine, blending Italian and Slavic influences, one of the most renowned in all of Croatia.
