New York is explored as much on foot as by subway, between the skyscrapers of Manhattan, the urban orchards of Central Park already tinged with autumn, and the neighbourhoods of Brooklyn, where art galleries and specialty coffee shops have replaced the old industrial warehouses. Dinner atop a skyscraper offers a view that alone sums up the scale of the city.
The road then winds through Vermont and New Hampshire, where miles of maple groves blaze red, orange, and yellow between mid-September and mid-October. Stops in white-clapboard villages typical of New England, tastings of hot cider and apple pie fresh from the oven at family farms open to visitors.
