Mendoza, capital of Argentine malbec, stretches out at the foot of Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Andes and the entire southern hemisphere. The vineyards, irrigated by a canal system inherited from pre-Columbian civilisations, produce some of the finest high-altitude wines in the world, while the city itself, rebuilt after the 1861 earthquake, stands out for its wide, plane-tree-lined avenues and shaded squares.
The Mendoza region counts over a thousand wineries, from grand historic houses to boutique family estates, all organised around malbec, a French grape variety that became the country's emblem after nearly disappearing from its original terroir. Tastings are often accompanied by an open-air lunch beneath the vines, facing the snow-capped cordillera.
Less than two hours' drive away, Aconcagua Provincial Park allows visitors, with no mountaineering experience required, to approach the highest point in the southern hemisphere at nearly seven thousand metres. A hike to Laguna de Horcones offers a head-on view of the summit, usually clear in the morning before clouds move in later in the day.
