A journey between Copán, a UNESCO-listed Maya city renowned for carved stelae among the most refined in Mesoamerica, and Roatán, a Caribbean island fringed by the world's second-largest barrier reef.
Nicknamed the Athens of the Maya world for the refinement of its sculpture, Copán produced some of the most detailed stelae of the entire civilisation, each depicting a ruler with ornaments carved in high relief of unmatched precision elsewhere. The site's Hieroglyphic Stairway, bearing more than two thousand glyphs, remains the longest Maya text ever discovered.
Fringed by the Mesoamerican reef system, the world's second-largest after Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Roatán offers underwater visibility that often exceeds thirty metres. Spared the mass development that has transformed other Caribbean islands, it remains one of the region's most affordable and best-preserved diving destinations.
