Siargao, a teardrop-shaped island in the Mindanao archipelago, owes its worldwide reputation to Cloud 9, an exceptional barrelling wave that hosts a stop on the professional surfing circuit every year. Long accessible only by ferry, the island has retained, beyond its now-international surf scene, hidden lagoons, natural pools, and fishing villages that make it one of the most authentic destinations in the Philippine archipelago.

Cloud 9, the Wave that Put Siargao on the Map

Cloud 9, an exceptional barrelling reef wave discovered by Australian surfers in the 1990s, owes its name to the English expression for a state of total euphoria, so impressed were its first discoverers by the quality of its barrel. This wave, which hosts a stop on the world professional surfing circuit every year, transformed an isolated fishing village into an international destination within a generation, without Siargao losing its laid-back atmosphere.

The Natural Pools and Hidden Lagoons

Beyond its surf scene, Siargao reveals natural pools carved into the coral rock, such as the famous Magpupungko that appears only at low tide, as well as Sugba Lagoon, a stretch of turquoise water surrounded by mangroves where diving platforms and kayaks allow exploration of a preserved ecosystem. Guyam Island and Naked Island, tiny palm-topped sandbanks reachable by boat within minutes of the coast, round out the picture of an island largely spared mass development.
