The uplifted coral cliffs of Maobitou, sculpted by millennia of marine erosion, and the Eluanbi lighthouse, marking the island's southernmost point, rank among the region's most photographed sites.
Kenting's beaches, exposed to the steady waves generated by the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines, saw the birth in the 1990s of the island's first organised surf scene, now home to schools and local competitions. Kenting's night market, one of the most renowned in southern Taiwan, rounds out the laid-back atmosphere of this beach town that draws surfers and Taiwanese families every summer in search of beaches less crowded than those in the north.
