A journey between Taipei, a lively capital between skyscrapers and night markets, and the marble gorges of Taroko National Park, carved by the Liwu River deep in the mountains.

Taipei's night markets

As much a social institution as a culinary one, night markets have set the rhythm of Taipei evenings for generations. Shilin, the largest, spreads its hundreds of street stalls through a maze of lanes, where stinky tofu, pan-fried oysters and bubble tea, born on this very island in the 1980s, are all savoured side by side.

The marble gorges of Taroko

Carved over millions of years by the Liwu River through pure marble bedrock, Taroko Gorge ranks among East Asia's most spectacular natural landscapes. Suspended trails, cut into the cliffside during the Japanese occupation, run alongside walls that sometimes rise more than a thousand metres above the river, in a lingering mist that only adds to the place's mystery.
