Antigua has claimed for decades to have three hundred and sixty-five beaches, one for every day of the year, a tourism slogan so famous it appears on the island's official vehicle licence plates. While the exact figure remains a matter of debate among local geographers, the island's extremely jagged coastline, alternating between secluded coves and long stretches of white sand, does indeed offer a diversity of beaches rarely matched on an island this size.
The three-hundred-and-sixty-five-beaches slogan, popularised from the 1970s onward by the Antiguan tourism board, relies on the island's exceptionally jagged coastline, whose outline exceeds two hundred and sixty kilometres for a total area of under three hundred square kilometres. While the exact count varies depending on the definition of a "beach" used, the central idea remains verifiable on the ground: it is possible to spend every day of a year-long stay on a different stretch of sand without ever repeating the same spot.
Half Moon Bay, on the Atlantic-exposed east coast, forms an almost perfect arc of pale pink sand within a protected nature reserve, its choppier waters compared to the west coast offering ideal conditions for bodyboarding and light surfing. This diversity of marine conditions from one coast to the other, rare on such a compact island, allows visitors to choose each day between a sheltered, calm beach or a more dynamic one exposed to the trade winds, according to the mood of the moment.
