Eagle Beach, regularly cited among the world's most beautiful beaches by the international press, owes part of its visual fame to a few isolated divi-divi trees on its sand, whose trunks and branches have curved horizontally under the effect of trade winds that blow across the island with remarkable steadiness almost year-round. These tormented silhouettes, which have become Aruba's most reproduced image on social media and in tourist brochures, testify on their own to the windy, dry climate that sets the island apart from the rest of the Caribbean.
Aruba, located outside the Atlantic cyclone belt and swept by constant trade winds that limit cloud accumulation, receives under five hundred millimetres of rainfall a year, an exceptional semi-arid climate for a tropical Caribbean island. This dryness has shaped a landscape unique in the region, planted with giant candelabra cacti and thorny scrub, explored from Arikok National Park, which covers nearly a fifth of the island's territory.
