Grand Anse, just minutes from the colourful port of St George's, stretches over two kilometres of crescent-shaped white sand regularly ranked among the Caribbean's finest beaches, sheltered by calm water protected by the bay's natural shape. Grenada, nicknamed the "Spice Island" for its nutmeg production, which once accounted for nearly half of world supply, even infuses this beach's atmosphere with cinnamon and clove scents sold by roaming vendors along the shore.
Grand Anse owes its regular crescent shape and exceptionally calm water to the configuration of the sheltering bay, protected at both ends by rocky headlands that break the swell before it reaches the shore. This natural protection, combined with a gentle slope that makes the shore accessible to swimmers of all levels, explains why this beach remains regularly cited among the most beautiful in the entire Lesser Antilles by international travel guides.
Grenada produced, until the 2000s, nearly half of the nutmeg consumed worldwide, a crop introduced in the 19th century that earned the island its nickname of "Spice Island," visible even on its national flag adorned with a stylised nutmeg. Although Hurricane Ivan in 2004 destroyed much of the historic plantations, spice cultivation remains deeply anchored in local identity, and roaming vendors continue to offer freshly harvested nutmeg, cinnamon, and clove along the island's beaches.
