Negril, on Jamaica's western tip, developed from the 1960s onward around two geographic assets unique on the island: Seven Mile Beach, seven kilometres of uninterrupted white sand among the longest in the Caribbean, and the limestone cliffs to the south, from which visitors leap off natural platforms into a turquoise sea at the exact moment of sunset, a ritual that has become emblematic of the town's laid-back atmosphere.
Seven Mile Beach, which actually stretches for about ten kilometres despite its name, owes its formation to a vast coral reef that protects the coast from waves and allows fine coral sand to accumulate uninterrupted along its entire length. This beach, Jamaica's longest, remains lined along its whole length with resort complexes and beach bars that made Negril, from the 1970s onward, the island's most popular beach destination for international travellers.
Negril's southern limestone cliffs, several metres high and plunging straight into translucent water, gave rise to a local ritual that has become emblematic: leaping from natural or purpose-built platforms at the exact moment the sun disappears over the horizon, a gesture celebrated every evening by dozens of visitors gathered at bars perched overlooking the sea. Jamaica's western tip, with no landmass to the west all the way to the horizon, also offers one of the best sunset-watching spots in the entire Caribbean.
