El Yunque, less than an hour's drive from San Juan, is the only tropical rainforest managed by the US Forest Service among its entire national forest system, a unique status protecting over eleven thousand hectares of dense canopy sheltering the coqui, a tiny endemic frog whose night-time call has become Puerto Rico's audible symbol. Its waterfalls accessible on foot, including La Mina and La Coca, rank among the island's most popular excursions.
El Yunque, protected in some form since 1876, a date making it one of the oldest forest reserves in the western hemisphere, remains today the only tropical rainforest managed by the US Forest Service across its entire national forest network, despite that network covering the whole country. This administrative rarity reflects Puerto Rico's unique position as an American territory in the tropics, and allows the preservation of over two hundred and forty tree species and twenty endemic orchid species.
The coqui, a tiny endemic frog under three centimetres long that owes its onomatopoeic name to its characteristic call, has over generations become Puerto Rico's audible symbol, heard every evening in El Yunque forest as well as in San Juan gardens. Unlike most frogs, the coqui develops directly from the egg without going through an aquatic tadpole stage, an adaptation that allowed it to colonise forest habitats lacking permanent water points.
