Built from 1539 to protect the bay's entrance, Fort San Felipe del Morro rises six levels above the Atlantic Ocean, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around it, Old San Juan unfurls its blue cobblestone streets, made of iron slag stones imported from Spain as ship ballast, between vividly coloured colonial houses and wrought-iron balconies.
Mosquito Bay, on Vieques island, owes its exceptional brightness to a record concentration of dinoflagellates, marine microorganisms that emit a bluish light at the slightest movement in the water. Long preserved by the island's status as a closed military zone, the bay is recognised by Guinness World Records as the brightest on Earth, best observed on moonless nights.
