A journey around the Pitons, twin UNESCO-listed volcanic peaks overlooking Soufrière, between sulphurous hot springs, black volcanic sand beaches and coral reefs just a few strokes from shore.

The Pitons, twin UNESCO-listed volcanic peaks

Gros Piton and Petit Piton, formed by volcanic activity around two million years ago, rise almost directly from sea level to over seven hundred metres, separated by just two kilometres of coastline. This landscape, one of the most recognisable in the Caribbean, earned the area its UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2004 — a landmark visible from almost every point along the island's southwest coast.

The Soufrière, a volcano you can visit by car

Nicknamed 'the drive-in volcano', the Soufrière crater is one of the few in the world directly accessible by vehicle, with no hike required. The sulphurous fumaroles it releases feed nearby hot springs, renowned for centuries for their therapeutic properties — Joséphine de Beauharnais, the future Empress of the French born on neighbouring Martinique, is said to have visited these very baths before her marriage to Napoleon.
