A journey between Paphos, its UNESCO-listed Roman mosaics, and the Troodos mountains, where monasteries painted with thousand-year-old Byzantine frescoes hide in mountain villages.
Discovered by chance in 1962 by a farmer ploughing his field, the mosaics of the House of Dionysus and neighbouring villas rank among the richest and best-preserved in the Mediterranean basin. Spread across a UNESCO-listed archaeological park, they depict mythological scenes with a precision that testifies to Paphos' wealth in Roman times.
Ten small churches scattered through the villages of the Troodos range hold, beneath steeply pitched wooden roofs typical of the region, a complete cycle of Byzantine frescoes spanning the 11th to 16th centuries, jointly UNESCO-listed. Austere outside but richly painted within, they testify to an uninterrupted pictorial tradition away from the great trade routes.
